Description

SOAR is a public charter school, serving 465 kindergarten through 5th grade students, committed to providing excellent educational opportunities to students in Far Northeast Denver. SOAR offers a holistic approach to education that includes an academically rigorous curriculum, social emotional learning, and art enrichment opportunities.

The Director of ELA & Assessment will serve as the ELA expert for SOAR and is expected to stay current on legal matters, district requirements, and best practices for instruction. The Director of ELA & Assessment is responsible for ensuring all instructional staff is fully supported to consistently deliver high quality ELD instruction in every classroom, every day, for every student. The Director of ELA & Assessment reports directly to the Head of School.

ELA Leadership Responsibilities

  • Identification of students requiring ELD instructional services
  • Ensure appropriate scheduling of ELD instruction as part of the master schedule creation
  • Support ELD instruction, e.g. ensure high quality delivery, consistency, etc.
  • Oversee and manage the re-designation of students as required
  • Monitor the academic growth of the school’s ELL student population
  • Deliver professional development
  • Liaison with Denver Public Schools ELA department/personnel
  • Collaborate as a member of the school leadership team

Assessment Leadership Responsibilities

  • Oversee, manage and facilitate ACCESS testing and serve as the school’s Secondary Site Assessment Leader (SAL) for PARCC/CMAS:
    • Develop procedures, schedules, and assessment instruments as required to ensure legal, fair and consistent administration of assessments.
    • Administer yearly training on assessments
    • Manage appropriate records as required by the district/school
    • Present performance reports to staff, the Board of Directors and members of the community as required.

Desired skills/qualifications

  • Substantial experience as a successful ELA teacher and instructional leader.
  • Deep understanding of the standards, assessments and instructional practices for students.
  • Possesses superior expertise of instructional pedagogy and ELA subject matter across K-5.
  • Demonstrated success leading school improvement initiatives that result in measurable improved student achievement
  • Excellent coaching skills and demonstrated track record of having improved others’ performance over time
  • Strong leadership abilities including an encouraging, motivating presence to help with conflict management, team building, mentoring and coaching, goal-setting, prioritization and strategic planning.
